Itchy Horse

Postby lisandsaf » Fri Jan 15, 2010 2:19 pm

Hi all..

Chrumbs its been ages since i posted,,, judging by every ones posts,, we all seem to be struggling through the horible weather and coping the best way poss,, thank goodness spring is not to far away and the days albeit a minute a day are getting lighter.. those long hot lazy days of summer still seem a long way off thou....

Does anyone have any soloutions to a very itchy horse.. Poor saf has rubbed her mane completely out it looks awful,,, it started in the bad snow when i put her really heavy hooded rug on her,, im wondring if she got to hot,, she is down to the skin, althou it doesnt appear sore just unsightly...

I have heard in the past of a green gel that you can rub on that prevents itching but allows the hair to grow back throu but i cant remember the name of it,, any ideas??

Happy new year to everyone and hopefully we will all be back riding in the next week of two, fingers crossed

Regards

Hi Lisa,

Sorry to hear about Saf's itchiness! The only green gel I can think of is Aloe Vera gel. My friends use it on their two horses who keep scratching the tops of their tails, and it does seem to help sooth it and ease the urge to scratch!

Hope this helps,

Hi Lisa,
Happy new year to you and Saf!

There is a grren gel which I use on sores or abrasions and it is a really good allrounder it is called antibacterial green gel- and is made by Lincoln! All the horse supplier shops should sell it!!!

Hope you are both well and have settled at your new yard!

Kind regards

I use Aloe Vera gel for any sore areas on my boys and it does seem to help. :)

Hi Lisa&Saf,
My friend's horse had exactly the same problem and this did seem to be due to her rug rubbing or irratating her neck. Her hair came out in handfulls and she was left quite bald. To alleviate the itching and to get the hair to grow back nice and strongly, take full advantage of the young nettles about at the moment. Cut a good quantity of stinging nettles, say enough to fill a 1/2 pint pot, pour over boiling water and stir. Leave to cool and add this (liquid & nettles) to Saf's feed everyday if possible. Her hair will soon grow through thick and strong. Nettles are also a good anti-lamminitus food so I am told.
