Safe Cobs Star Rating System

These descriptions are more for guidance than to categorise our cobs. Most horses fall somewhere between one level and another, or will have elements of more than one star rating in their temperament or ability.

We would like everyone to know that regardless of how many stars have been awarded to a particular horse, each one will have been chosen and trained to be a Safe Cob.

In this respect they are all exactly the same; only their level of schooling and responsiveness set them apart from their one star companions. We hope you enjoy choosing which "star" is right for you.

Star

Our one star cobs are all low energy and steady in their outlook. They can take responsibility for the rider without reacting adversely to nerves. They are forgiving by nature, and are not overly sensitive to misplaced aids. They will help the rider restore confidence and overcome feelings of insecurity.

StarStar

Our two star cobs are similar in all respects to their one star friends, but with slightly increased responsiveness and sensitivity to the aids. They can be more alert to the movements of the rider on the ground and in the saddle, which make them suitable for those of you who have previously owned horses but lack confidence, or the more mature rider.

Three star cobs are more sensitive to the aids of the rider, and often have the ability and inclination to do other activities. They tend to have more energy and impulsion, and greater alertness to the environment. These cobs are often ideal for sponsored rides and local shows, and can be suitable for a confident novice.

Four star cobs are for more experienced riders who would like the option to compete as well as hack. They will have the movement and temperament for jumping or dressage, and be familiar with working in a school. Our four star cobs are not sharp to ride, simply responsive to the aids of the rider, with increased sensitivity.

Five star cobs are fantastic to hack, but have the added ability to be all-round competition horses as well. They are established on the flat, and are light and responsive rides. These cobs are suitable for general Riding and Pony Club activities, and will have been to local shows.

Six star cobs often include the lighter riding horse type. They all have the temperament to match their ability, with a highly trainable nature. These horses are produced not only to hack sensibly, but will also be competing at affiliated level, or are getting ready to do so.
